Kaziranga Travel Guide for Indian and International Tourists

Kaziranga National Park is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in India and one of the best places in the world to experience the greater one-horned rhinoceros in its natural habitat. Located in Assam in Northeast India, Kaziranga combines wildlife, wetlands, grasslands, forests, tea gardens and local culture.

For international visitors, Kaziranga can also be the starting point for a wider Assam and Northeast India holiday, covering destinations such as Guwahati, Majuli, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tezpur and Manas National Park.

This complete travel guide explains how to reach Kaziranga from foreign countries and different parts of India, where to stay, how to plan a safari, what to see nearby and how to build a complete Assam itinerary.

About Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is located in Assam, mainly across the districts of Golaghat, Nagaon and Biswanath. The park headquarters are at Bokakhat, while Kohora is the main tourist hub and entrance area for the Central Range.

Kaziranga is famous for its population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, but the park is also home to elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, tigers and a large variety of birds.

The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Its landscape is one of its biggest attractions. Visitors can see:

  • Tall elephant grass
  • Wetlands and marshes
  • Tropical forests
  • Open grasslands
  • Rivers and streams
  • Wildlife-rich floodplains

The combination of these habitats makes Kaziranga very different from many other wildlife destinations in India.

Why Should You Visit Kaziranga?

Kaziranga is especially attractive for travellers interested in:

🦏 Wildlife
🐘 Elephants
🐅 Tigers
🦌 Deer
🐃 Wild water buffalo
🐦 Birdwatching
🌿 Nature
📷 Wildlife photography
🍵 Tea tourism
🏡 Rural tourism
🏛️ History and culture
🍲 Assamese cuisine

A major attraction is the opportunity to see the one-horned rhinoceros in its natural environment.

However, Kaziranga should not be considered only a safari destination. The surrounding region offers enough attractions to create a multi-day Assam holiday.

How Can Foreign Tourists Visit Kaziranga?

For an international traveller, the easiest approach is generally:

Your Country → Indian International Airport → Guwahati → Kaziranga

Guwahati is the principal gateway to Assam and Northeast India. The Assam Forest Department currently recommends Guwahati as the most convenient airport for travellers arriving from outside Northeast India, followed by a road journey to Kaziranga.

A typical international journey could look like:

London / Paris / Frankfurt / Dubai / Singapore / Bangkok / etc.
↓
Delhi / Mumbai / Kolkata / another Indian international gateway
↓
Guwahati
↓
Private taxi / bus / tour vehicle
↓
Kaziranga

The exact flight routing depends on the traveller’s country and the airlines operating at the time of travel.

Visa Requirements for Foreign Tourists

Foreign nationals visiting India generally need a valid passport and an appropriate Indian visa or eligible e-Visa, unless they are covered by an exemption. The official Indian Visa Online portal is operated under the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs.

Before travelling, international visitors should:

  1. Check whether their nationality is eligible for an Indian e-Visa.
  2. Apply through the official Indian visa system.
  3. Ensure that their passport meets the validity requirements.
  4. Check the permitted airport/entry point.
  5. Carry their visa approval and travel documents.
  6. Keep hotel/accommodation details and onward/return travel information available.

Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders are also currently required to submit an e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival, according to the official Indian Visa Online portal. This is an arrival-information requirement and is not itself a visa.

For current requirements, travellers should use the official Indian Visa Online portal rather than relying on private visa agents.

Which Airport Should You Choose?

There are two particularly useful airport options for a Kaziranga trip.

1. Guwahati Airport

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati is generally the best choice for international and many domestic travellers.

The Assam Forest Department currently gives an indicative distance of about 250 km from Guwahati Airport to Kohora, with a road journey of roughly 5 hours, depending on traffic and conditions.

Advantages

  • Best connectivity to the rest of India
  • International gateway for Assam
  • More domestic flight options
  • Convenient for starting an Assam tour
  • Easy to combine with Guwahati sightseeing

Recommended for

International tourists + first-time Assam visitors + travellers covering multiple destinations

2. Jorhat Airport

Jorhat Airport (Rowriah Airport) is considerably closer to Kaziranga.

The Assam Forest Department currently lists approximately 105 km by road from Jorhat Airport to Kohora, with a journey of around 2 hours.

Advantages

  • Much closer to Kaziranga
  • Good option for travellers already in Upper Assam
  • Convenient for Jorhat–Kaziranga–Majuli itineraries

Recommended for

Domestic travellers + Upper Assam travellers + visitors combining Kaziranga with Jorhat and Majuli

Other Airports You Can Consider

Depending on your itinerary, travellers may also use:

  • Tezpur
  • Dibrugarh
  • Silchar

However, road distance, flight schedules and onward transportation should be checked before booking. The Assam Forest Department lists Guwahati, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Silchar among air-access options for reaching the Kaziranga region.

For most first-time visitors, Guwahati or Jorhat will be the most practical choices.

How to Reach Kaziranga from Guwahati

Guwahati is approximately 240–250 km by road from the Kohora tourism area, depending on the starting point and route. The government currently estimates roughly 4–5 hours, though actual travel time can vary.

Option 1: Private Taxi

This is the most convenient option.

Guwahati Airport → Kaziranga

A private car allows you to:

  • Stop for food
  • Stop for photographs
  • Travel directly to your hotel
  • Carry luggage comfortably
  • Add sightseeing stops

This is particularly suitable for families and international tourists.

Option 2: Bus

Government and private bus services connect Guwahati with the Kaziranga region. Assam Tourism notes regular luxury bus services between Guwahati and Kaziranga.

Option 3: Pre-arranged Tour

International visitors may find it easier to book a complete package covering:

Airport pickup → Hotel → Safari → Local sightseeing → Drop-off

How to Reach Kaziranga from Jorhat

Jorhat is one of the easiest gateways to Kaziranga.

Jorhat Airport → Kohora → approximately 105 km → around 2 hours

according to the current Assam Forest Department travel information.

You can hire:

  • Private taxi
  • Tourist vehicle
  • Pre-booked hotel transfer
  • Tour package vehicle

Jorhat is particularly useful if your itinerary includes Majuli and Upper Assam.

Reaching Kaziranga by Train

Kaziranga itself does not have a major railway station at the park entrance.

Travellers can reach Guwahati, Jorhat or other suitable railway stations and continue by road.

The Assam Forest Department currently recommends reaching Guwahati or Jorhat by rail and continuing to Kohora by road.

Some tourism sources also mention Furkating and Jakhalabandha as railway options in the wider Kaziranga region. Because train routes and stoppages can change, visitors should check the current Indian Railways schedule before booking.

Reaching Kaziranga from Major Indian Cities

From Delhi

A convenient route is:

Delhi → Guwahati → Kaziranga

You can either fly to Guwahati and take a taxi or bus, or travel by train to Guwahati.

From Kolkata

Possible routes include:

Kolkata → Guwahati → Kaziranga

or

Kolkata → Jorhat → Kaziranga

The second option can be convenient when flight schedules work well.

From Mumbai

The simplest route is generally:

Mumbai → Guwahati → Kaziranga

A flight to Guwahati followed by road travel is usually easier than combining multiple long-distance ground journeys.

From Bengaluru

A practical route is:

Bengaluru → Guwahati → Kaziranga

After arriving in Guwahati, continue by road.

From Chennai

A similar route is:

Chennai → Guwahati → Kaziranga

From Hyderabad

The common approach is:

Hyderabad → Guwahati → Kaziranga

From Northeast India

If you are already travelling in Northeast India, Kaziranga can be combined with:

  • Meghalaya
  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Nagaland
  • Manipur
  • Tripura
  • Mizoram
  • Sikkim

For example:

Guwahati → Shillong → Kaziranga → Arunachal Pradesh

or:

Guwahati → Kaziranga → Nagaland

Road conditions, permits and border requirements should be checked when combining multiple Northeast states.

Best Time to Visit Kaziranga

The main wildlife tourism season is generally during the cooler and drier part of the year.

Assam Tourism currently describes November to April as the best period to travel, with sightseeing particularly favourable from late February to early April.

However, park opening dates and safari operations can change because of:

  • Flooding
  • Weather
  • Forest conditions
  • Conservation requirements
  • Government decisions

Therefore, tourists should verify the current season before making non-refundable travel arrangements.

How Many Days Do You Need?

For Kaziranga alone, 2–3 days is a good starting point.

2-Day Kaziranga Trip

Day 1: Arrival + hotel check-in + local sightseeing
Day 2: Morning safari + departure

3-Day Kaziranga Trip

Day 1: Arrival + check-in
Day 2: Morning safari + afternoon/evening activity
Day 3: Second safari + nearby sightseeing + departure

4-Day Trip

Day 1: Arrival
Day 2: Safari
Day 3: Second safari + tea garden/village experience

For an international visitor, I would recommend a longer itinerary rather than visiting Kaziranga alone.
